FM-01 Reviewed · v1.2
Summarise a long document with checkable citations
A part-by-part summary where every claim carries a short verbatim quote you can find in the source.
You end with
A one-page summary in which each claim points to a section and a quote, plus a list of what the summary leaves out.

Is it the right skill?
Use it when
- Someone will act on the summary and needs to trust it.
- The document is longer than you can read before the decision.
- You need to hand the summary to a colleague who will check it.
Skip it when
- The document is a scanned image with no text layer; extract text first.
- The decision is legal, medical or financial and no qualified reviewer will read the source.
- The document is confidential and your assistant is not approved for it.
Before you start
- The document as selectable text, with its headings intact.
- An assistant you are allowed to use for this document's sensitivity.
Steps
Do not move on until the checkpoint holds.
-
Split the document by its own headings
Use the document's sections as parts. Keep each part well inside the assistant's context limit and number the parts.
Checkpoint The part count matches the section count, and no section was skipped.
-
Summarise each part with locators
Ask for at most six bullets per part. Each bullet must end with the section number and a verbatim quote of eight to fifteen words that supports it.
Checkpoint Every bullet has a section number and a quote.
-
Spot-check the quotes
Search the source for three quotes per part, chosen at random, not the first three.
Checkpoint Every checked quote appears verbatim. If one does not, re-run that part and check again.
-
Merge without adding
Ask for a single summary built only from the part bullets, keeping their locators.
Checkpoint No claim in the merged summary lacks a locator from a part summary.
-
State what is not covered
Add a closing line listing sections, tables or appendices the summary does not represent.
Checkpoint A reader can tell which parts to read in full.
What can go wrong
- Accuracy Assistants can invent plausible quotes. The spot-check is the step that makes the summary trustworthy; do not skip it.
- Privacy Pasting a document sends it to the tool's operator. Check the document's classification first.
Worked example Demo
Fictional input, written for this demo entry. It shows the shape of the result, not a real case.
- Input
- Part 3 of a fictional 40-page facilities report: section 3.2, Heating costs.
- Result
- Heating costs rose for a second year, driven by the older east wing (3.2: "the east wing accounts for most of the increase in gas use").
