FM-12 Needs review · v1.1

Draft sensitive text with a local model, offline

A model that runs on your own machine, set up once and then used with the network off, for drafts that must not leave it.

You end with

A working local setup with a checked licence, verified offline operation, and a habit of deleting temporary files.

  • Local model on your machine, full support

Is it the right skill?

Use it when

  • Drafts contain information that policy forbids sending to any external service.
  • Draft quality matters less than where the data goes.

Skip it when

  • Your machine cannot run a model at a usable speed.
  • The output needs current facts; local models know nothing after their training.

Before you start

  • A machine with enough memory for the model size you choose.
  • Permission to install software and to download a model once.

Steps

Do not move on until the checkpoint holds.

  1. Choose a model and check its licence

Pick a model sized for your hardware and read its licence for the use you intend.

Checkpoint The licence permits your use, and you saved a copy of it.

  2. Download once, then disconnect

Download the runtime and the model from their official sources, verify checksums where published, then turn the network off.

Checkpoint The model answers a test prompt with the network disabled.

  3. Check for background traffic

Review the runtime's settings for telemetry or update checks and turn them off.

Checkpoint No outbound connection is attempted during a session, as seen by your firewall.

  4. Draft and clean up

Work as usual. Afterwards delete conversation logs and temporary files the runtime keeps.

Checkpoint The runtime's history folder is empty after a session.

What can go wrong

  • Security Download from official sources only. A tampered model file is a supply-chain risk.
  • Rights and licensing Model licences differ; some restrict commercial use.
  • Accuracy Smaller local models make more factual mistakes. Use them for drafting, not for facts.
